Overview
This lecture series explores a curated selection of prophetic Ḥadīths that address the roles of women, their moral traits, critical faculties, and behaviors in personal and relational contexts, as well as their capabilities in managing life’s affairs. Presented through both narrative and analytical approaches to Ḥadīth compilations, these sessions are led by Dr. Mutaz Al-Khatib, director of the Master's Program in Applied Islamic Ethics at the College of Islamic Studies, Hamad Bin Khalifa University. Dr. Al-Khatib offers a methodological, analytical reading that integrates the general with the specific, the text with its context, and examines how interpretations of Ḥadīth are influenced by the recipients’ perspectives and the challenges posed. This analysis connects individual Ḥadīths to broader prophetic discourse, illustrating the interplay between revelation and history, and the influence of social customs and changes on the interpretation of Ḥadīths.
The aim is to move beyond the polarized views that either highlight women’s exceptional status in Ḥadīth compilations or criticize these texts as diminishing women’s roles to support an assumed patriarchy. These lectures endeavor to provide a comprehensive analysis that transcends these controversies.
